Hi. I was having a problem finding files in Windows Explorer, and Art Lindsley was kind enough to help me out. He wrote a wonderful tutorial and I would like to submit it to your site to maybe help others with similar problem. I have only been using the computer less than a year and need all the help I can get. I asked his permission and he said it was fine and would save his fingers, which are worn almost to the bone! Thanks for your attention. Bev
| Beverly: | Hi Art; Appreciate so much your advice on the list. I have a question that no one, including Gateway, can answer. I do all of my deleting on designs in explorer. |
| Art: | I assume you are talking Windows Explorer??? |
| Beverly: | They do not go into the recycle bin. |
| Art: | Yes they do. |
| Beverly: | If I go to start, documents, the last fifteen designs that I have deleted are listed there. Are they really deleted from my drive or do I have 6,000 designs lurking some where? |
| Art: | Those are just as you say -- The last 15 designs that you have used. The files you deleted are in the RECYCLE BIN. You can verify that by RIGHT CLICKING on the recycle bin. A menu pops up. I just chose explore. What looks like the Windows Explorer pops up however it is showing what is in the recycle bin. You could scroll down and look for the name of a file you just deleted. These are still there in case you accidentally deleted something, you could restore it to its previous location by right-clicking on the file and choosing you guessed it restore. To permanently delete all those files in the recycle bin right click on the recycle bin and select empty recycle bin. It will ask are you sure you can say yes. |
| While you are done with this lets do one other thing. Right click on the recycle bin and choose properties. Use one setting for all drives should have a black dot in it. If not select it. Then move that little slide bar just below (with your mouse) to the left till it says Oh about 1 or 2%. And then click OK. | |
| Now if you want to get rid of those lines in start/documents do this. Right click on a blank area on the start bar. A menu pops up. Select Properties. Select the START MENU PROGRAMS tab. Towards the bottom press the CLEAR BUTTON. Press OK. | |
| If you were to go up and click the ADVANCED BUTTON windows will open up a special version of Explorer. Go ahead and do it if you wish. These various lines, if you will look very closely are each and every line which are on your START MENU selections. You can move, copy, delete, duplicate, put in another place about anything you like to make clicking on the start menu easier for you. Except, of course for a few of the Windows special lines. Whatever you do to these lines does not affect in any way the programs on your hardrive. These just are there to make it easier for you to access your programs. | |

For example (I assume you are going to print this out), click on START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES. See the program called PAINT ( a drawing program) ? How would you like to have it on your start menu just above Programs? For an example then lets try this. Select the advanced button as described above. Click on the + to the left of Programs Click on the + to the left of Accessories
You should now be able to see the PAINT line to the right side of the screen. | |
| Now if you did it right you should be able to click on START and see the word PAINT on the menu right above programs. I do this to all the programs I use lots of. | |
| For example I clicked on START MENU to mark it. Went up to FILE/NEW/FOLDER. And make an empty folder appears on the screen and I named it Husqvarna Programs. Bingo the line now is showing up on the Start Menu when you click on START. Now in that folder I place just the applications which I use most of (ie customizer, digpro, etc.). Under Programs I made another new folder calling it the same thing and left click on all those Husq programs, buzz tools, etc and while holding down the mouse button move them up and drop them into my new folder. Walla! I now have less clutter on my start menu. Beginning to see the picture? (Golly I just had an awful thought! What if you already know this stuff <grin> . My fingers are getting tired). | |

Play with it if you wish. Oh one other thing while that TASKBAR PROPERTIES window is up and running. I always like to check the SHOW SMALL ICONS IN START MENU (under the taskbar options tab). Try that and see what happens. Little more organization for me.--Art Lindsley-- |
