I stitched out the four small
& one large embroidery designs on 100% white cotton fabric.
I sized the four small designs to 6 " square.
I sized the larger design to 7 " square.
Throughout this sewing process I did use ¼ " seam allowances.
After determining how I would group them, I then decided to make each
block 9 ½ " unfinished.
I had to make a paper piece foundation pattern for the geese blocks
in each block - did this by drawing pattern 2 ½ x 5 ½ " on paper and
paper piecing each one.
I added 2 ½ " squares on each end of two pieces to bring the piece to
9 ½ " (do this twice for each block).
The center flag design was fussy - cut to 5 "….a geese block was added
to each end to make 9 ½ ".
Join the three rows to make one completed flag/star block.
To make the embroidered blocks 9 ½", I first cut red strips 1 ½ " and
sashed the top & bottom of each square and then the two remaining sides.
I then cut 1 ¼ " strips of blue and repeated the sashing as I had done
the red to make each block 9 ½ ". The larger center square was sashed
with 1 ½ "strips of blue fabric again to make the block 9 ½ "
Join the blocks together as shown in picture..quilt as desired and add
¼ " wide binding to finish.
This design was completely original in it's layout the additional embroidered
square used (flagheart) was from www.cvkey.com. I want to thank Lili
and the HATS group for starting the contest and getting some lurkers
out from under our rocks. Sometimes we feel under creative after seeing
all the everyone else is working on. Thank you to each designer who
gave us such wonderful designs to use. I plan to stitch the flags donated
by Sew Teri-fic Designs to make the tabs to hang my wall hanging after
its quilted. Frank's design was a challenge for me but I used my Viking
template to mark the second part of the design and hooped & stitched..great
the first time.
Thanks again. I am now ready to begin basting my creation so I can get
it quilted.
