Questions regarding
WinZip routinely are posted to the HATS list. The following was submitted
by Anne Pyle in an effort to better
explain this most nifty program. Our thanks to both Anne for sharing this
information and all the other invaluable help and insight that she gives us
on so many other topics. Thanks Anne!
HOW TO UNZIP FILES
The first thing is to be sure you have the
proper software for unzipping files. Do you have either PKunzip, WinZip or
TurboZip (or any other zip utility) on your computer? If not, the first thing
to do is to get WinZip, as it is a standard for this type of program. WinZip
will allow you to download a demonstration copy of the program and use it
for 30 days free of charge. This is a utility you will need over and over
now that you've started downloading designs so I suggest you go ahead and
purchase it, but the demo will at least get you started. You can order WinZip
at http://www.winzip.com/ Once you
have WinZip installed the rest is really easy. I'm giving the instructions
in detail so that it will be easy for you to recognize each step. If you already
have one of the other zip utilities the process is similar. Write me (anne@ceannmor.com)
if you have any questions about this or need any further help.
-
Go to whatever directory
you have your downloaded zip files in and double-click on the name of the
zipped file.
-
WinZip will open a small
window on your desktop.
-
Now, the reason files are
zipped is to make them take up less space. A zipped file (called an "archive")
can contain only one design (or file) or can combine a number of them. So,
when WinZip opens the file the first thing it will do is to give you a list
in its little window of all of the files included in the zipped file.
-
Select the file (or files)
which you want to end up with by highlighting the names of the files. If
you wish to unzip all of the files then skip to step 5.
-
Click on the icon in the
WinZip window which says "extract."
-
WinZip will open another
box (window) which asks you where you want these files to end up. Make sure
that the name of the folder you want the files to end up in is showing in
the "extract to" box and then click ok. If the directory you wish to install
into is not on your hard-drive you can type in the name of a new directory
and WinZip will create it for you.
-
WinZip will go back to its
first window and you'll see, at the bottom of the window's screen, the names
of the files being shown as they are unzipped ("extracted") for you. On
the right bottom corner of the WinZip window are two buttons, one red and
one green. As long as the red button is lit WinZip is still working on the
files. When the green light comes on it means WinZip has finished and your
files are where you said you wanted them to go. Now you're ready to use
your files and embroider something beautiful!!!!
-
Open
WinZip.
-
A
zipped file is called an "archive." Your first step will be to click on
the "new" button on the menu bar. This will open a window in WinZip called
"New Archive."
-
The
upper box in this window is labeled "create in." Here you will tell it what
directory/folder you wish the new archive to be stored in.
-
In
the lower part of the window will be a box labeled "file name." Give your
new zip file a name. You don't need to add any extension to your file name.
This is already taken care of by the lowest box in the window, labeled "show
types," which already says "zip files." Click ok.
-
A
new window will open in the directory you told WinZip to create your archive
in. Using the up-arrow key, etc, just as you do when finding a file to open,
find the file you wish added to your zip file (archive). When you find the
file to add, either double click on the file name or single click on the
file name and then single click on the word "add."
-
Your
new archive will open on your screen with the file you chose listed in it.
If you wish to add additional files to this archive click the "add" button
on the menu bar and follow the same procedure as in step 5.
-
When
you have finished adding all of the files you wish to have included in your
archive, just click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the window
(the close window button). No further action is necessary from you. You
don't have to say "save" or anything like that.
-
When
you look in the directory you told WinZip to create your archive in you
will find it listed. If you double-click on the name it will open just like
the zip files you download from the "net." This is a nice way to double-check
and make sure everything is included the way you wished them to be. Then
just close it back up again and you have a zipped file ready to send off
to anyone you wish or to use as desired.
