Alphabetizing Programs in Windows Start Menu
Marian and Art Lindsley

The following was submitted by Marian Ecker and Art Lindsley. On the HATS list, Marian mentioned that she would like to be able to alphabetize her programs in the Windows Start Menu. Art Lindsley, also one of our HATS members posted a reply to her plea for help. With the permission of both Art and Marian, below you will find the dialog between the two of them. Thanks Art, Thanks Marian!

Marian: Howdy - I'll admit this is a little picky but I have something I would like > to fix on my computer and I can't figure out how to do it. I'm hoping one > of you experts can help me. > > When you choose Start, Programs a list of the different programs that are > available on your system show up. If you install new software it puts those > new programs at the bottom of the list. I would like to have them ALL be in > alphabetical order so it is easier for me to find my programs. How do I do > that? I have Windows 98 (if that matters).
Art: That matters a lot Marian. Because it is now so simple. Just put your cursor on what you want to move. Hold down the right mouse button and drag it to where you want it. When you get there release the button. It will ask you if you wish to MOVE, or COPY it there. You can move those lines around anywhere you wish. It does not affect the program on your hard drive whatsoever. You can even copy that line and put in a couple of places if you wish.

Also if you right click on an empty spot on the start bar at the bottom of the screen. Then select PROPERTIES from the menu which appears. The TASKBAR PROPERTIES window will open. Select START MENU PROGRAMS, and then the ADVANCED tab.

A special version of explorer window will open. These lines will be an exact duplicate of what you see when you click the START button. Move them around/copy/paste/ make new folders and move stuff into them to your hearts desire. Try moving the GAMES our of the ACCESSORIES folder. Right click on it and drag it over to the left side of the screen and drop it on the line that says START MENU. Select COPY to make a copy there. Now go down and select the start button and if you did this right the games folder should appear there on the top of the first screen as well.

Good luck. Copy this out and save it and then you can teach someone how to do this one of these days. Art
